Connecting Greek Mythology to Present Times

Jim Yavenditti, Director of Studies
St. Luke’s School parent Shiva Sarram visited our senior English elective, Advanced/Regular Classical Mythology, to discuss growing up in Iran and her experience emigrating from the country after the 1978 Revolution.

This was a great opportunity for our students to hear a personal experience from 1978-1980 that had some similarities to Greek plays from 2,500 years ago. These seemingly unrelated stories have universal themes that can connect the far-distant past to more recent times. Students connected Sarram’s childhood story with the fifth-century BCE Greek tragedies about war and how it can have direct, horrible consequences for those who were not instigators and leaders of the conflict.
